News Briefs: Refugee admissions program; GoATL Fund raises $1.4M; Midtown Alliance Annual Meeting

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has affirmed the City of Atlanta’s participation in the U.S. Refugee Admissions Programs (USRAP) via letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo. “America has a well-documented history of helping the downtrodden in their times of need, and to turn our backs on those who are suffering is to turn our backs on the highest ideals of freedom this nation,” Bottoms said in a statement. In September, the White House issued an executive order, which states that the federal government “should resettle refugees only in those jurisdictions in which both the State and local governments have consented to receive refugees under the Department of State’s Reception and Placement Program.” The formal notice can be used by the Coalition of Refugee Service Agencies (CRSA) and other advocacy groups to continue to provide assistance and services to refugees in Georgia.

The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta’s GoATL Fund, which provides capital to support nonprofits and social enterprises, has raised more than $1.4 million in donor co-investment this year, including $500,000 from The Kendeda Fund. The first impact investing fund of its kind in the southeast, GoATL has committed more than $9 million to date for nonprofit organizations working to achieve sustainable social outcomes through affordable housing, quality education, access to healthy foods and health clinics and innovative funding and training for low-income entrepreneurs.

More than 1,300 business, civic, and community leaders will gather at the Fox Theatre or Midtown Alliance’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday morning, Feb. 25.  The keynote address will feature insights from Bruce Katz, an international expert and author on how cities will thrive in the 21st century. Tickets to the 2020 Midtown Alliance Annual Meeting are available for purchase online at MidtownATL.com/AnnualMeeting2020. Cost per attendee is $75 for guests employed by Midtown Alliance member organizations and $100 for guests of non-member organizations.
