Update: Ribbon cutting for The Waterworks Greenspace on Dec. 2

The Friends of Atlanta Waterworks and the Upper Westside Improvement District will host a ribbon cutting and community celebration for opening of The Waterworks Greenspace Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. The event was rescheduled from Dec. 1 because of the weather forecast.

City leaders are expected to be on hand for the event, which is open to the public.

This greenspace, which is adjacent to the city waterworks facility at the corner of Northside Drive and 17th Street, is the first phase of a years-long, community-run grassroots effort to reopen the park. It was closed in 1996 due to security concerns at the time of the Olympics.

Upper Westside Improvement District, the Department of Watershed Management and the Friends of Atlanta Waterworks have cleaned out the overgrowth and opened the area to the public. When complete the new 4.5-acre space will provide the neighborhood with much needed greenspace featuring walking trails, benches, and dramatic city views.
