The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Internet retailer Amazon has decided to split its new headquarters – dubbed HQ2 – between two cities: Long Island City, NY and Crystal City, VA. A formal announcement is expected by Amazon today.
Atlanta was one of 20 finalists named by Amazon for HQ2 and The Gulch property, which is set for multibillion dollar redevelopment, was touted as the prime location. Teasingly, the WSJ reports that other cities on the finalist list might get “major” Amazon sites, likely to be distribution hubs for the retailer.
If Amazon had chosen Atlanta for HQ2 it could have meant a $5 billion investment and 50,000 new jobs. The state and city have offered up more than $1 billion in incentives and infrastructure improvements to sweeten the deal.
More as it develops.
