Gov. Nathan Deal has told the AJC he will sign House Bill 859, which would permit guns on college campuses, into law if it reaches his desk. The legislation is back in the senate after being passed last week by the house. Deal said arguments against the law lacked “validity.” The new law would allow anyone 21 or older with a weapons license to carry a gun at a public college or university campus. Dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses and athletic events would be excluded.
The Atlanta Housing Authority has authorized the transfer of the old Bankhead Court housing project property on Donald Lee Hollowel Parkway from the City of Atlanta to Atlanta Public Schools. The transfer is part of a deal for the city to pay back APS on deferred taxes from the Atlanta BeltLine. APS wants to build a bus barn on the site for maintenance and storage of its bus fleet, which many parents and residents are again. Read more on the bus barn story at this link.
The Atlanta BeltLine will hold a quarterly briefing on its progress on Tuesday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cleveland L. Dennard Conference Center at Atlanta Technical College, Bldg. B 1560, Metropolitan Parkway, S.W. Curbed Atlanta reports that work on extending the BeltLine’s Eastside Trail from Irwin Street south to Kirkwood Avenue will begin this spring.
