The first day of school for the 2015-16 academic year is Aug. 3 for City Schools of Decatur,  Aug. 5 for Atlanta Public Schools and Aug. 10 for Fulton County Schools and DeKalb County Schools.

To mark the occasion, a number of events are being held, starting this weekend with the Year of Boulevard Back-To-School Block Party. The event will be held Saturday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kindezi School, 386 Pine St. NE. There will be representatives from local schools, refreshments, music, sports, a chance for kids to earn a backpack and bingo for the seniors.

On Saturday, July 25, the Atlanta Public Schools Back-To-School Bash will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Metropolitan State College, 1630 Metropolitan Parkway SW. There will be a backpack and school supply giveaway, on-site school registration, health screenings for students, activities, information about after school programs and much more. APS has also announced that districtwide open houses will be held Monday, Aug. 3. High school open house will be 1-3 p.m., middle school from 3-5 p.m. and elementary from 5-7 p.m.

Kroger’s Atlanta Division, in partnership with Children’s Restoration Network and WSB-TV, will hold its 21st annual Back 2 School campaign from July 18 – Aug. 1, during which 124 Kroger stores will serve as school supply drop-off sites. Through Children’s Restoration Network, a local nonprofit agency focusing on homeless children in metro Atlanta, children will receive the donations to better prepare themselves for the new school year. To help those children who don’t have the necessities for school, stop by a Kroger in Atlanta to donate. Items requested for the “Back 2 School” drive include: new and gently used book bags; wide and college-ruled notebook paper; spiral notebooks; three ring binders; pens and pencils; calculators; markers; scissors; file folders; rulers; crayons; glue; and dictionaries. Kroger customers can also purchase a prepackaged school supply bag at area metro Atlanta stores to use as their donation. To find a nearby Kroger store, visit
