News Briefs: Group wants Bond out; Maynard movie; cityhood update

Common Cause Georgia is calling for Atlanta City Councilman Michael Julian Bond to resign after he agreed to pay more than $15,000 in penalty’s and reimbursements for ethics violations. According to Creative Loafing, the organization has also sent a letter to Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard calling for a criminal investigation into Bond’s misuse of public money.

New production company Auburn Avenue Films is producing a documentary about Atlanta’s first African-American Mayor, Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr. The documentary, Maynard, is currently in pre-production led by an Oscar nominated director Samuel D. Pollard and Emmy and Peabody-winner Sheila Curran Bernard has been tapped as writer. The executive producers are Wendy Eley Jackson, Maynard H. Jackson, III, Elizabeth Jackson Hodges, Howie Hodges and Brooke Jackson Edmond.

While no legislation has yet to be introduced at the Gold Dome to create a new city (Tucker or LaVista Hills) in north DeKalb or annex Druid Hills into the city of Atlanta, Decaturish reports on the growing opposition to the cityhood and annexation movements. Several groups are working to convince legislators that the best decision they can make in the 2015 session is no decision at all. There are also several petitions circulating with a similar message.
