Market Profile: Decatur Organic Farmers' Market By Jenn Ballentine

Decatur resident Greg Coleson wanted a place where he and his neighbors could buy fresh, locally grown food. With the help of the Morningside Farmers’ Market, he created the Decatur Organic Farmers’ Market six years ago.
Originally located on the square, the market moved to its current location in the Bank of America parking lot on the corner of Commerce and Church four years ago. With ample parking and high visibility, the market has grown significantly since it moved.
While the market is currently accepting only organic farmers and food producers, not all vendors are certified organic growers, given the high cost of obtaining certification. All seven growers, however, utilize organic and sustainable practices.
In addition to offering locally grown produce, the market offers organic and vegan baked goods, local and imported artisan cheeses, grass-fed eggs, fresh flowers, plants and work from local artists.
According to Market Manager Lauren Justice, "What distinguishes the Decatur market from others is its ecological and social integrity and responsibility. The market works hard to support Georgia farmers and advocate for sound environmental practices. The hardest thing is not having enough growers. There is more demand than there is supply"
The Decatur Organic Farmers Market is held on Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. www.decaturfarmersmarket.com.
