Atlanta Council votes on streetcar planning, introduces vending solution
The Atlanta City Council voted this afternoon, July 15, to allow the Atlanta BeltLine to manage planning and design for the Atlanta Streetcar expansion. Earlier this month, we reported in our update of the Downtown streetcar project that discussion was already ongoing about a further east-west expansion to connect the streetcar to the Atlanta BeltLine. The first streetcar loop, which will run along Edgewood and Auburn avenues, will connect Centennial Olympic Park to the King Center and is expected to open in Spring 2014.
Also at today’s meeting, City Councilman Michael Julian Bond introduced an ordinance to allow street vendors to temporarily resume selling merchandise using existing city kiosks free of charge while Mayor Kasim Reed and his staff come up with a new vending plan for the city. The ordinance was sent to the city’s public safety committee for further review. Vendors have been protesting since March when the city cracked down on street vendors putting them out of business.
