Common Threads: Icebox weaves philanthropy into their mission

Santa should have a twinkle in his eye when he flies over Icebox this month. In helping countless non-profits reach their goals for more than 10 years, it’s clear that this business is one that gives back to the community in a big way and, as the song goes, they’ve been good for goodness sake. Icebox operates a philanthropic arm of their company with the sole purpose to outreach and help others. They call it Common Threads.

Co-owner Jordy Gamson says that they believe giving back to the community is “an essential ingredient for prosperity. It allows our company to connect with many great causes and opens our brand up to many new opportunities. We also believe in good Karma – what goes around comes around.”

Gamson and his business partner, Scott Alterman, saw a need to help people from the time they opened their doors in 2001. With many non-profits seeking their help to create promotional materials, they began developing partnerships and eventually formalized their outreach with the Common Threads initiative.

In 2010, The Better Business Bureau presented them with the BBB Torch Award for Community Service. “We do not do the things we do to win awards but it is always nice to be recognized. It was really a surprise. I was not expecting it at all,” says Gamson.

Consistently rated one of Atlanta’s top 5 promotion product firms, Icebox specializes in branded products and clothing. From the basic to obscure, they find ways to get logos displayed in a memorable way. When Atlanta INtown was in the market for KEEP IT INtown decals to promote the local campaign to support local (see p. xx), we headed to Icebox. They embraced the campaign and helped get it off the ground with decals for storefronts and fans for festivals. Their office is in Inman Park and the company mascot, Ping the penguin, waves hello from the blue building on Irwin Street. To get clients’ creative juices flowing they have a colorful display of banners, shirts, ice cubes that light-up, stadium mood cups that change color, license plate holders, golf bags and way more. There are things you didn’t even know you need, but will want (imagine your logo on a floating cooler at the lake).

Icebox regularly supports many non-profits you’ve likely heard of, like American Cancer Society, Atlanta Community Food Bank, American Heart Association, Camp Twin Lakes, Fashion Cares (Susan G Komen) and more. They are also grassroots by getting involved in the local Inman Park Festival and helping non-profits, which might not be on your radar (see sidebar). “Every time I meet the many different volunteers and staff members and hear their personal stories … I feel like we are doing the right thing,” says Jordy.

In their statement online, they sum it up nicely: “We believe strongly that you must first give in order to receive, and therefore, we take it very seriously when our customers come to us and ask us to sponsor their ‘good works.’”
